New Delhi, 7th March: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday strongly criticised the West Bengal government, accusing it of insulting President Droupadi Murmu and showing disregard towards Santal culture.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Prime Minister described the development as “shameful and unprecedented” and said it had deeply saddened people who believe in democracy and the empowerment of tribal communities.
“The pain and anguish expressed by Rashtrapati Ji, who herself hails from a tribal community, has caused immense sadness in the minds of the people of India,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister alleged that the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal had “crossed all limits” and said the state administration was responsible for the incident.
Modi also expressed concern over what he described as the casual treatment of Santal culture during the controversy surrounding the International Santal Conference in the state.
“It is equally unfortunate that a subject as important as Santal culture is treated so casually by the West Bengal Government,” he said.
Emphasising the dignity of constitutional institutions, the Prime Minister said the office of the President must always remain above political considerations.
“The office of the President is above politics and the sanctity of this office should always be respected,” Modi said.
He added that he hoped better sense would prevail within the West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress.
The remarks come amid a growing political row after President Murmu earlier raised questions about protocol and arrangements during her visit to West Bengal for the International Santal Conference, triggering sharp reactions between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress ahead of the state Assembly elections.
