Guwahati, 6th March: A fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force went missing during a routine mission in Assam on Friday, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation across parts of the northeastern state. The aircraft, identified as a Sukhoi Su-30MKI, lost contact with ground control shortly after taking off, according to defense officials.
Sources in the Indian Air Force confirmed that the aircraft was on a training sortie when communication was suddenly lost with air traffic control. The fighter jet had reportedly taken off from an airbase in Tezpur and was flying over a designated training sector when the incident occurred.
Officials said the last radar contact with the aircraft occurred over a remote area, believed to be close to forested terrain. Immediately after the loss of contact, the Air Force launched an extensive search operation involving helicopters, surveillance aircraft, and ground teams.
Defense authorities stated that the missing aircraft had one pilot on board at the time of the incident.
