Srinagar, 3rd March: Jammu and Kashmir Police have warned of strict legal action against rioters and stone throwers after 12 people, including five police personnel, were injured during violent clashes in Srinagar on Monday.
The violence broke out during protests held to mourn the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. While police had imposed restrictions and disallowed major gatherings, small groups emerged from different localities and attempted to march towards Lal Chowk in the city centre.
According to officials, protesters turned violent after being stopped by security forces, resorting to heavy stone pelting. Police responded with tear gas shells and baton charges to disperse the crowd. Clashes were reported from multiple locations, including Shalteng on the Srinagar-Baramulla Highway, where some private vehicles were also damaged.
Police said that while peaceful expression is respected, rioting and public disorder will not be tolerated.
“In view of recent developments in the Middle East, we respect the right of citizens to peacefully express themselves through lawful means. However, incidents of rioting, stone-throwing, clashes and disruption of public order at some places are not acceptable,” the police statement said.
Authorities warned that strict action would be taken against instigators involved in unlawful activities and urged citizens to exercise restraint. Police also highlighted that violence leads to injuries, closure of educational institutions and hardship for families, traders and daily wage earners.
After several hours of unrest, security forces cleared the highway and restored traffic movement.
On Sunday, thousands had gathered peacefully at Lal Chowk to protest Khamenei’s killing, raising slogans and staging demonstrations without incident. However, by evening, authorities began tightening control measures to prevent further escalation.
Lal Chowk was sealed with metal barricades and concertina wires at entry and exit points. Mobile internet services were restricted, and all schools and colleges across Kashmir have been ordered shut for two days.
Heavy police and paramilitary deployment remains in place across the Valley as authorities attempt to prevent further violence. Officials described the situation as sensitive but under control.
