New Delhi, 3rd March: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reaffirmed India’s commitment to wildlife conservation on the occasion of World Wildlife Day, highlighting the country’s biodiversity achievements and sharing a Sanskrit Subhashitam underscoring nature’s interdependence.

In a series of posts on X, the Prime Minister said the day is an opportunity to celebrate the planet’s faunal diversity and acknowledge the efforts of those working towards wildlife protection. He stressed the need to strengthen conservation measures, sustainable practices and habitat protection to ensure that wildlife continues to thrive.

Highlighting India’s conservation record, the Prime Minister noted that the country is home to over 70 per cent of the world’s tiger population, the largest number of one-horned rhinoceroses and the highest population of Asiatic elephants. He added that India remains the only country where the Asiatic lion thrives in the wild.

The Prime Minister underlined that the government has undertaken multiple initiatives for wildlife protection, including the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance to promote cooperation and exchange of best practices among nations. He also referred to focused efforts for conserving the Great Indian Bustard, Gharial and Sloth Bear, as well as the translocation of cheetahs to restore ecological balance.

Emphasising India’s cultural ethos rooted in harmony with nature, the Prime Minister shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam:

“निर्वनो वध्यते व्याघ्रो निर्व्याघ्रं छिद्यते वनम्।
तस्माद् व्याघ्रो वनं रक्षेद् वनं व्याघ्रं च पालयेत्॥”

He explained that the verse reflects the deep ecological balance between forests and tigers — without forests, tigers perish; without tigers, forests decline — highlighting the interconnectedness of all living beings.

The Prime Minister reiterated that India’s civilisational values promote compassion towards wildlife and reinforce the resolve to protect biodiversity for future generations.
