Kolkata, 27th Feb: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook Kolkata on Friday afternoon, briefly interrupting a public address by Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar in the city.

A video shared by IANS showed Majumdar at the podium when tremors were felt. As lights and fixtures began shaking at the venue, the minister paused and asked the gathering, “Should I stop?”, drawing visible concern from those present.

According to the weather office, the earthquake struck at 1:22 pm and originated in Nayabazar, Bangladesh. The tremors were felt across several parts of Kolkata, prompting residents and office-goers to evacuate buildings as a precaution.

At Nabanna, the West Bengal state secretariat, employees rushed out onto the streets. Similar scenes were reported from the IT hub in Salt Lake and various multi-storey residential complexes across the city, where occupants gathered in open areas.

While the quake caused panic and brief disruption, there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties. Authorities are monitoring the situation.
