New Delhi, 25th Feb: Harsh Singh, accused of hurling racist abuses at three women from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, has issued a public apology, saying he and his wife are “ashamed” of their remarks.
Singh and his wife Ruby Jain came under scrutiny after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The altercation reportedly began over dust falling into their lower-floor residence during an electrical installation being carried out at the rented accommodation of the three women.
The dispute escalated, with the couple allegedly using racist and derogatory language. In the video, the women are seen objecting to the remarks, which were made in the presence of police personnel. The couple allegedly referred to the women using slurs and made defamatory claims about their profession.
FIR Registered, Probe Underway
The Delhi Police has registered a case under sections related to outraging the modesty of a woman, criminal intimidation, and promoting enmity and hatred between groups.
Speaking to ANI, Singh said the remarks were made in the “heat of the moment” and insisted there was no intention to offend. He said he and his wife were cooperating fully with the police and expressed faith in the judiciary.
“I am ashamed and personally apologise to all the people of the Northeast,” he said, urging social media users not to conduct a “media trial.” He also alleged that his family had been targeted online with abusive and doctored content.
Political Reaction
Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia said he was “deeply disturbed” by the incident.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, he said he had spoken to Pema Khandu and raised the matter with the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking immediate and stringent action. He added that any injustice against people from the Northeast would not be tolerated and assured that the accused would be dealt with swiftly.
Social Media Backlash
Despite the apology, several social media users rejected Singh’s explanation, arguing that the remarks reflected deeper prejudice rather than momentary anger. Others pointed to recurring instances of harassment faced by people from the Northeast in different parts of the country, describing the episode as part of a broader pattern.
The incident has reignited debate on racial discrimination and the safety and dignity of Northeastern citizens residing in metropolitan cities.
