New Delhi, 24th Feb: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the existing North-South Corridor of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited from GIFT City to Shahpur.
The 3.33-kilometre elevated stretch will include three new stations and is scheduled for completion within four years. The total estimated cost of the project stands at ₹1,067.35 crore.
The extended corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, with ridership expected to rise to approximately 58,059 passengers by 2041.
The extension aims to strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, benefiting multinational companies, educational institutions and commercial establishments along the route. It is also expected to ease daily commuting for business, employment and educational purposes, enhancing overall network integration and passenger convenience.
The project is likely to generate nearly 1,000 jobs during the construction phase, while about 250 personnel will be employed for operations and maintenance after completion. Indirect employment opportunities are also expected to arise from allied activities.
GMRC, a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat, will implement the project.
Currently, the 68.28-km Ahmedabad Metro Phase-I and Phase-II network, comprising 53 stations, has been operational since September 2022 and January 2026 respectively. The system records an average daily ridership of around 1.6 lakh passengers.
