Guwahati, 23rd Feb: The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp political attack against Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, with party spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sarmah alleging that he functioned as a “Pakistani asset” in the state.

Addressing a press conference at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, BJP’s Assam headquarters, Sarmah claimed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report constituted by the state government had placed certain findings in the public domain regarding alleged links of Gogoi and his spouse with Pakistan. He alleged that the report exposed what he termed “anti-Assam and anti-India character” within the Congress leadership.

The SIT, formed under the guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, was cited by the BJP as part of what it described as a broader crackdown on activities allegedly linked to Pakistan-sponsored destabilisation efforts.

Sarmah said the BJP would not allow the consolidation of any force perceived to be inimical to India’s sovereignty. He asserted that the party’s cadre would remain vigilant against any attempt to undermine national integrity.

In a broader attack, the BJP spokesperson described the Congress as hostile to Assam and the nation, referring to a protest incident involving Congress youth activists during the recent AI Impact Summit in Delhi. He characterised the episode as reflective of what he termed the party’s “moral bankruptcy.”

The Congress has not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations. Political observers note that the exchange comes amid heightened political activity in Assam, with tensions rising between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress ahead of key electoral battles.
