Jewar/New Delhi, 21st Feb: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday participated via video conferencing in the groundbreaking ceremony of the HCL-Foxconn Semiconductor Unit in Uttar Pradesh, marking a major milestone in India’s push for technological self-reliance.
The project, a joint initiative between HCL Technologies and Foxconn, is aimed at strengthening India’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity and enhancing its presence in the global chip ecosystem.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister described the establishment of the semiconductor facility as a decisive step toward technological self-reliance. He said India is advancing simultaneously in both software and hardware, positioning itself as a comprehensive technology powerhouse.
“This decade is India’s Techade. The technological strides we make today will form the foundation of our strength in the 21st century,” he said, emphasizing that chips in the 21st century are as critical as oil was in the 20th century.
Referring to global supply chain disruptions witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prime Minister said India had resolved to build a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem to avoid future vulnerabilities. He underlined that “Made-in-India” chips would power sectors ranging from artificial intelligence and 6G to defence and electric vehicles.
The Prime Minister noted that the project would further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s emerging identity as a technology powerhouse. He said the state is poised to become a major hub for semiconductor design houses, research and development centres, and startup ecosystems, creating extensive employment opportunities for youth.
Highlighting India’s industrial transformation over the past decade, he said electronics manufacturing has grown six-fold, with mobile phone production witnessing a 28-fold rise and exports increasing nearly 100-fold. Uttar Pradesh, he added, now accounts for more than half of India’s mobile phone manufacturing.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed that democratic India is a trusted global partner, stating that India’s participation in global value chains enhances their resilience. “Today, the world is looking at India as the centre of the tech future,” he said.
The ceremony follows closely on the heels of the recently concluded AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, reinforcing India’s ambition to become a leading force in advanced technologies and semiconductor manufacturing.
