New Delhi, 20th Feb: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condoled the passing of the Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Shillong, Dr. Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, expressing deep sorrow at the sudden loss of the 54-year-old leader.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Saddened by the passing of Lok Sabha MP from Shillong, Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon. He will be remembered for his dedicated service to the people of Meghalaya. My thoughts are with his family, friends and supporters during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.”

Dr. Syngkon, who represented the Shillong constituency in the Lok Sabha on a Voice of the People Party (VPP) ticket, died late Thursday evening after collapsing during a football game in Mawlai Mawiong, Shillong. He was rushed to a local health centre and later to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw, where he was declared dead around 8:42 pm on February 19, 2026, following a suspected cardiac arrest.

His unexpected demise has sent shockwaves across Meghalaya’s political landscape, with leaders across party lines, including Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, expressing grief and admiration for his commitment to public service.

Syngkon had been elected to the 18th Lok Sabha in 2024 with a significant mandate and was widely regarded for his grassroots engagement and advocacy on issues impacting his constituents.

Funeral arrangements and official condolence meetings in the state are expected to follow as family, colleagues and supporters pay their final respects to the departing leader.
