New Delhi, 19th Feb: The Vice-President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, on Thursday released the book The Sage who Reimagined Hinduism: The Life, Lessons and Legacy of Sree Narayana Guru, authored by Shashi Tharoor, at the India International Centre in New Delhi.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President said that Sree Narayana Guru emerged as a spiritual guide at a time when caste divisions and social discrimination were deeply entrenched. He described the Guru’s message — “One Caste, One Religion, One God for humankind” — as both a spiritual proclamation and a transformative call for equality, dignity and universal brotherhood.
He noted that the Guru challenged injustice through inclusive temple consecrations and by promoting education as a tool for empowerment. Recalling his visit to Sivagiri Mutt last December, the Vice-President said the site continues to inspire people to uphold equality and human dignity.
Quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said Sree Narayana Guru’s teachings remain a guiding force in efforts to eliminate discrimination and promote inclusive development.
Highlighting India’s spiritual legacy, the Vice-President referred to saints such as Adi Shankaracharya and Ramanujacharya, stating that without Adi Shankaracharya there would be no united India today. He said these reformers reshaped society, removed superstition and restored dignity to citizens through spiritual awakening.
Commending Dr. Tharoor for authoring the book, the Vice-President described him as a distinguished diplomat, parliamentarian and writer who has contributed meaningfully to public discourse. He said the book would help expand the global reach of India’s spiritual heritage and inspire deeper research into its civilisational roots.
He also highlighted the role of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam in advancing the Guru’s mission through education and socio-economic upliftment.
Stressing the importance of documenting spiritual and social reformers, the Vice-President said preserving such narratives is essential to safeguard India’s civilisational memory. He expressed confidence that the book would encourage critical thought among youth and motivate society to uphold ideals of justice, harmony and unity.
