Mumbai, 17th Feb: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India and France have elevated their relationship to a “Special Global Strategic Partnership,” highlighting deep cooperation in defence, innovation, trade, and emerging technologies during a joint press statement with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Welcoming President Macron to Mumbai, the Prime Minister said the partnership between the two nations is not only strategic but also a force for global stability and progress in an era of uncertainty.
He recalled their previous meeting in Marseille and noted the historical links between the two countries, including the role of Indian soldiers during World War I and the legacy of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar.
Modi said the inauguration of a helicopter assembly line in India reflects the deep trust between the two countries. He noted that India and France will jointly produce the world’s only helicopter capable of operating at the heights of Mount Everest, which will also be exported globally.
Describing 2026 as a turning point in India–Europe relations, the Prime Minister referred to the recently concluded ambitious free trade agreement with the European Union. He said new agreements would prevent double taxation and boost trade, investment, and mobility between India and France.
He also announced the launch of the India–France Year of Innovation, aimed at strengthening people-to-people ties, industry partnerships, and exchanges among students and researchers. The initiative will connect startups, MSMEs, and innovators across sectors such as defence, clean energy, space, and emerging technologies.
The Prime Minister said the two countries are expanding cooperation in critical minerals, biotechnology, and advanced materials. New initiatives include the Indo-French Centre for AI in Health, the Indo-French Centre for Digital Science and Technology, and a National Centre of Excellence for skilling in aeronautics.
On global issues, Modi said India and France share democratic values, support a multipolar world, and favour reforms in global institutions. He added that both countries would continue to support peace efforts in regions such as Ukraine, West Asia, and the Indo-Pacific, while maintaining a joint commitment to eliminate terrorism in all its forms.
He also highlighted cultural cooperation, including joint efforts at the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum and plans to work together on the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal. India will also open a Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in France to strengthen cultural ties.
The Prime Minister thanked President Macron for his commitment to the bilateral partnership and called for joint efforts toward global stability and prosperity.
