Guwahati, 9th Feb: A political controversy erupted after a video allegedly showing Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma firing at framed photographs of Muslims surfaced online, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties.
The video, which was reportedly posted on social media by the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party and later deleted, showed the Chief Minister shooting at a framed photograph of Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi wearing a skullcap alongside another Muslim man. The wall behind the photo bore the words “No mercy,” and the post was captioned “Point blank shot.”
Reacting strongly, Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal termed the video a “call to genocide.” In a social media post, he said the clip reflected the mindset of a “fascist regime” and demanded action from the judiciary.
The official Congress handle also criticised the video, stating that it appeared to glorify the targeted killing of minorities. The party described it as deeply disturbing and said it could not be dismissed as mere troll content, calling for strict action.
The Trinamool Congress also condemned the clip, accusing the BJP of normalising hatred and reducing politics to what it described as “performative bloodlust.”
