Guwahati, 6th Feb: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a sharp political attack on Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that his wife holds multiple bank accounts in Pakistan, some of which are still operational.
Addressing the media, Sarma claimed that Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth, had “several” bank accounts in Pakistan and not just one or two, raising questions about national security implications.
“Please, if you can ask Gaurav Gogoi how many bank accounts his family has in Pakistan. Today I am giving you hints—till today his family’s bank accounts are running in Pakistan. I will speak on the 8th,” the Chief Minister said.
He further questioned the seriousness of the issue, stating, “The man who has a bank account in Pakistan, how dangerous he will be.”
Sarma also targeted the state Congress organisation, alleging that its headquarters in Guwahati had become a centre of anti-Assamese and anti-national thinking.
“Assam Congress’s head office Rajiv Bhawan has turned out to be the base of the anti-Assamese and the anti-national mindset today,” he said.
The remarks came on a day when the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee launched its ‘Parivartan Yatra’ from the revered Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, marking the start of a statewide outreach campaign.
The yatra was inaugurated with prayers at the temple, where Gaurav Gogoi, who heads the state Congress unit, sought blessings for peace, harmony and development.
Party leaders said the campaign would travel from the Kamakhya Temple towards Jubin Kshetra, covering Sonapur, Nagaon and other regions across the state.
Speaking at the launch, Gogoi said the yatra was aimed at building a new Assam based on social harmony, economic growth and respect for law and order.
“All our leaders have prayed for the development and well-being of the people of Assam. Today marks the beginning of our journey for the future of the youth, women and the entire state,” AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh said.
The Congress said the Parivartan Yatra would focus on grassroots outreach and present the party’s vision for inclusive growth, even as political tensions escalate ahead of the state’s electoral battles.
