New Delhi, 4th Feb: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will host a National Conference of State Election Commissioners (SECs) on February 24, 2026, in New Delhi, marking the first such national-level gathering in over 25 years.
The conference will be held at Bharat Mandapam and is expected to be attended by State Election Commissioners from all States and Union Territories. The last National SEC Conference was held in 1999.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will chair the conference along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, who will also address the participants during the inaugural session.
State Election Commissioners will attend the conference along with their legal and technical experts, while Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all 36 States and Union Territories will also be present.
The primary objective of the conference is to build greater synergy between the ECI and State Election Commissions, particularly in areas related to electoral processes, logistics and institutional coordination within their respective constitutional and legal frameworks.
Participants will engage in focused discussions on electoral laws governing elector eligibility in States and UTs, as well as technological interventions led by the ECI, including the recently launched ECINET digital platform and the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The ECI will also share its expertise and best practices in the preparation of electoral rolls and the conduct of elections in accordance with the Constitution of India and the country’s legal framework.
State Election Commissions are constituted under laws enacted by respective States, as enabled by the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, and are entrusted with the superintendence, direction and control of electoral rolls and elections to Panchayats and Municipal Bodies.
The upcoming conference is expected to strengthen coordination, knowledge-sharing and institutional cooperation between the ECI and SECs, reinforcing the foundations of grassroots democracy in India.
