New Delhi, 3rd Feb: Hari Shankar Verma, a 1987-batch Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer, has taken over charge as Member (Operations and Business Development), Railway Board, along with the role of Ex-officio Secretary to the Government of India.

Prior to this appointment, Verma was serving as Director General (Safety), Railway Board, where he played a key role in strengthening Indian Railways’ safety framework. Under his tenure, the number of consequential train accidents declined sharply due to a strong focus on process improvement and systemic reforms.

During his distinguished career in Indian Railways, Verma has held several critical operational and managerial positions. These include Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Central Railway, Mumbai; Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, Southern Railway; Chief Passenger Traffic Manager, Central Railway, Mumbai; Principal Chief Operations Manager, Hubli, South Western Railway; and Director General, Indian Railways Institute of Transport Management, Lucknow.

Across these assignments, he is credited with setting multiple benchmarks in operational efficiency, passenger services and institutional management.

Verma has been honoured twice with the Rail Minister Award, in addition to receiving several awards at the General Manager level. He has also undergone advanced management training in Singapore, Malaysia and Italy, and is widely regarded as a specialist in railway traffic and operations management.
