New Delhi, 3rd Feb: Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Chirag Paswan chaired the second meeting of the Committee constituted to counter misleading publicity related to processed foods. The meeting was held at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre and was attended by committee members, senior government officials, industry leaders and representatives of major industry associations.
Addressing the gathering, the Union Minister emphasised that food processing plays a vital role in ensuring food safety and nutrition, reducing wastage and improving farmers’ incomes. He underlined the need to actively counter myths and misinformation surrounding processed foods through science-based communication, transparency and responsible engagement.
Calling for a proactive outreach strategy, Paswan stressed leveraging digital platforms, social media and counter-influencers to present balanced and factual narratives. He said all stakeholders must collectively ensure that accurate and credible information on food processing reaches citizens across the country.
Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries Avinash Joshi outlined the steps taken since the previous meeting, including stakeholder consultations, expert reviews and nationwide dissemination of approved FAQs. He highlighted the need for coordinated efforts to strengthen informed public discourse.
The meeting saw participation from senior officials of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, including the Special Secretary and Joint Secretaries. Heads and senior representatives from regulatory and technical bodies such as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management were also present. FSSAI CEO Ranjit Punhani attended the deliberations.
Industry participation included leading associations such as FICCI, CII, ASSOCHAM, All India Food Processors’ Association, Association of Food Scientists and Technologists of India and Forum of Snack and Namkeen Manufacturers, along with senior executives from major food processing companies.
