Ashoknagar, 3rd Feb: Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday distributed assistive devices to 1,237 persons with disabilities and senior citizens at a special Divyangjan and Elderly Assistive Devices Distribution Camp held at Marup village in Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh.

Addressing the gathering, Scindia said the initiative was not merely about distributing equipment but about restoring dignity, promoting self-reliance and strengthening social inclusion. He described the programme as a step towards empowering divyangjan to lead independent and confident lives.

Calling public service a long-standing tradition of the Scindia family, the Union Minister said service in the Gwalior-Chambal region has always been viewed as a moral duty rather than an exercise of power. He said the target to reach 8,240 divyangjan across the parliamentary constituency—including 1,456 in Ashoknagar, 1,745 in Guna and 5,250 in Shivpuri—represents the hopes, dignity and future of thousands of families.

Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inclusive approach, Scindia said the replacement of the term “viklang” with “divyang” marked a fundamental shift in the nation’s mindset. “This change redefined disability as a source of strength, not limitation,” he said, adding that persons with disabilities are equal partners in nation-building.

Citing examples ranging from sage Ashtavakra to renowned scientist Stephen Hawking and Paralympic gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia, Scindia said true capability is shaped by determination and confidence, not physical limitations.

The Minister noted that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 was enacted, increasing the number of recognised disabilities and significantly enhancing budgetary support—from ₹330 crore to nearly ₹2,000 crore. Over the last 12 years, more than 18,000 empowerment camps have been organised nationwide, benefiting over 21 lakh divyangjan, he said.

He also highlighted initiatives such as special railway e-ticketing photo identity cards for persons with disabilities and the recognition of divyangjan through Presidential awards. Scindia thanked Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar for his support in advancing disability welfare initiatives.

Concluding his address, Scindia assured beneficiaries of continued support. “Your soldier will always stand with you for your respect, empowerment and self-reliance,” he said, urging citizens to actively include divyangjan in the mainstream as India moves towards the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.
