New Delhi, 2nd Feb: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the grant of Miniratna Category-I status to Yantra India Limited (YIL), marking a major milestone in the transformation of the Defence Public Sector Undertaking into a profit-making corporate entity within four years of its inception.
Congratulating YIL, the Defence Minister expressed satisfaction over the initiatives taken by its management to increase turnover, maximise indigenisation and meet key performance benchmarks required for the Miniratna Category-I status.
Since its formation, YIL has posted strong growth across key parameters. The company’s sales rose sharply from ₹956.32 crore in 2021–22 (H2) to ₹3,108.79 crore in FY 2024–25. On the export front, YIL recorded a jump from nil exports in 2021–22 (H2) to ₹321.77 crore in FY 2024–25.
YIL’s product portfolio includes carbon fibre composites, assembly products for medium and large calibre ammunition, armoured vehicles, artillery guns and main battle tanks, along with glass composites and aluminium alloys.
The Miniratna Category-I status empowers the YIL Board to incur capital expenditure of up to ₹500 crore on new projects, modernisation and equipment purchases without seeking government approval. This enhanced autonomy is expected to accelerate the company’s growth and strengthen its role in defence production and exports.
The government had corporatised the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board into seven new DPSUs on October 1, 2021, to improve efficiency, functional autonomy and innovation in defence manufacturing. YIL is one of these Schedule ‘A’ DPSUs functioning under the administrative control of the Department of Defence Production.
In May 2025, Miniratna-I status was granted to Munitions India Limited, Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited and India Optel Limited, taking forward the corporatisation reforms.
