Dhemaji, 30th Jan: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Friday said that protection of tribal rights, culture, language, literature and music is achieved through cultural unity and not through violence, while addressing the 10th Mising Youth Festival in Dhemaji, Assam.
Speaking at the event in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Shah said that youth festivals like the Mising Youth Festival show the right path for safeguarding tribal identity and heritage. He said the Donyi-Polo tradition of the Mising community, centred on nature worship, teaches that worshipping nature is equivalent to worshipping God.
The Home Minister announced that the Centre will conduct special recruitment drives for the Mising community in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), enabling youth from the community to contribute to national security. He said the Mising community has made supreme sacrifices for the nation, and India will always remember its contribution.
Highlighting development initiatives, Shah said that the long-pending Bogibeel Bridge was completed under the Modi government with the hard work of Mising workers, and has become a symbol of new India’s vision. He added that by the end of 2026, ‘Made in Assam’ semiconductor chips will reach global markets, enhancing India’s technological pride and creating large-scale employment for local youth.
Shah said that today’s youth in Assam are choosing vision over weapons and dreams over fear, pointing to peace accords and large-scale disarmament in the Northeast. He also noted that the Assam government has recognised Mising language as a medium of education in lower primary schools and has provided large numbers of government jobs on a merit-based system.
On demographic concerns, the Home Minister said the High-Powered Demographic Mission announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a decisive step to address infiltration and unnatural demographic changes. He said the Assam government has already freed large tracts of land from illegal encroachment and will continue firm action against infiltrators.
Shah reiterated that the Modi government has significantly increased funding for Assam’s roads, railways, airports and tribal welfare, and said the Centre remains committed to inclusive growth, cultural preservation and sustainable development in the Northeast.
