Dibrugarh, 30th Jan: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Friday said that Dibrugarh will be developed as Assam’s second capital, as he laid the foundation stone for the new Assam Legislative Assembly building and inaugurated and launched five major projects worth approximately ₹1,715 crore.
Addressing the programme in Dibrugarh, Shah said that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development and balanced regional growth in Assam. He said the new Legislative Assembly complex, coming up on 57 bighas of land, will give Dibrugarh the status and facilities of a capital city.
Highlighting economic opportunities, the Home Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has signed the India–European Union free trade agreement, which will enable Assam’s tea to reach European markets such as Paris and Berlin with zero tariff. He said this will significantly benefit tea growers and strengthen Assam’s global trade presence.
Shah also spoke about flood mitigation and infrastructure development, stating that the Centre has sanctioned ₹692 crore for the development of 15 wetlands in Assam to reduce flood intensity, improve irrigation and support agriculture.
On internal security, the Home Minister reiterated that the government is creating systems to prevent infiltration and to identify and remove illegal entrants. He said the present dispensation is determined to protect Assam’s demography and national security.
During the visit, Shah also inaugurated the first phase of a world-class Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex, laid the foundation stone for its second phase, initiated construction of residences for legislators and performed ground-breaking for a Wildlife Research Institute in Dibrugarh.
He credited the Modi government and the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government for ushering in peace, development and economic growth in the state, and contrasted it with earlier periods marked by violence and instability.
