Korean Parliamentary Delegation Meets RS Deputy Chairman Harivansh

New Delhi, 30th Jan: A Parliamentary delegation from the Republic of Korea, led by Lee Hack-Young, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, called on Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Shri Harivansh, at Parliament House on Friday.

During the meeting, Harivansh said that India and the Republic of Korea are strong and progressive democracies and share a robust tradition of parliamentary exchanges. He noted that regular dialogue between the two Parliaments has played an important role in strengthening the India–Korea Special Strategic Partnership.

Highlighting the multi-dimensional nature of bilateral ties, Harivansh said the two countries enjoy close cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, defence, culture and people-to-people relations, anchored in shared values of democracy, rule of law, global peace and prosperity.

Referring to historical and cultural linkages, he recalled the matrimonial alliance between Princess Suriratna of Ayodhya and King Kim Suro of Gimhae, describing it as a symbol of deep-rooted civilisational ties between India and Korea.

He also noted with pride that the Government of the Republic of Korea installed a statue of Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in Seoul in 2011 to mark his 150th birth anniversary. Shri Harivansh recalled Tagore’s poem Lamp of the East (1929), which paid tribute to Korea’s heritage and future, and continues to be fondly remembered in the country.

Expressing satisfaction over the steady growth in bilateral trade and investment, Shri Harivansh said that trade between the two countries has reached approximately USD 27 billion. He also highlighted that Korean companies such as Hyundai, Samsung and LG have become household names in India.

Emphasising the role of Parliamentarians in translating shared vision into action, Shri Harivansh assured the visiting delegation of his full support in strengthening parliamentary cooperation. He expressed confidence that sustained dialogue and exchanges would further deepen India–Republic of Korea relations and wished the delegation a fruitful stay in India.

Members of Parliament Rekha Sharma, Muzibulla Khan and Dr. Parmar Jashvantsinh Salamsinh, along with P. C. Mody, Secretary-General, Rajya Sabha, senior officers of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat and officials from the Ministry of External Affairs were also present on the occasion.
