New Delhi, 29th Jan: Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, C.P. Radhakrishnan, on Thursday highlighted India’s strong economic position and underscored the crucial role of Parliament as he delivered his opening remarks at the commencement of the 270th Session of the Rajya Sabha, the Budget Session of Parliament.
Greeting Members at the start of the session, the Vice President said it was heartening to note that India continues to be the fastest-growing major economy in the world and is poised to soon become the third-largest global economy. He said India’s rising influence on the global stage makes the role of Parliamentarians increasingly important in shaping the nation’s economic direction.
Referring to the President’s Address to both Houses, Shri Radhakrishnan said it has set a definitive tone for national priorities. He noted that over the course of 30 sittings, the Rajya Sabha will thoroughly examine the Union Budget 2026-27 and key legislative proposals of the government.
He also pointed out that Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees will scrutinise the Demands for Grants of various Ministries and Departments during the recess, and urged Members to make impactful contributions both in the House and in Committees.
Highlighting the heavy legislative agenda, the Chairman said several important Bills will come up for consideration, underscoring the responsibility of Members to utilise every minute of scheduled business to fulfil the aspirations of the people they represent.
The Vice President called for robust parliamentary oversight while maintaining the highest standards of decorum and order. He stressed that respectful exchange of views and constructive debate are essential for healthy parliamentary functioning.
Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Shri Radhakrishnan said, “Democracy — disciplined and enlightened, is the finest thing in the world,” and urged Members to reflect these values through their conduct in the House.
He expressed hope for full cooperation from all parliamentary parties to ensure a productive session and said the Budget Session should serve as a strong stepping-stone in India’s journey towards a prosperous, self-reliant and Viksit Bharat.
