New Delhi, 28th Jan: Sloganeering erupted in Parliament on Wednesday during President Droupadi Murmu’s address to both Houses at the start of the Budget Session, as Opposition members protested against the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) Act, commonly referred to as the VB-G RAM G law.
During her customary speech, President Murmu highlighted the new rural employment framework, stating, “For employment and development in rural areas, Viksit Bharat-G RAM G law has been formed. With this new reform, there will be 125 days of employment guarantees in villages.”
While members of the ruling NDA benches thumped their desks in support, Opposition MPs raised slogans and created an uproar, demanding the withdrawal of the new law. The disruption briefly affected the proceedings as protests intensified inside the House.
The VB-G RAM G law is positioned by the government as a revamped version of the previous UPA-era Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The legislation was passed during the last session of Parliament amid sharp Opposition resistance and received presidential assent in December.
Opposition parties have argued that the new framework undermines the original spirit of MGNREGA and could weaken employment security in rural areas. They have accused the government of dismantling a key social safety net without adequate consultation.
The government, however, maintains that VB-G RAM G will provide enhanced rural employment opportunities, improve transparency, and ensure 125 days of guaranteed work, compared to earlier provisions.
