Bathinda, 17th Jan: Five residents of Gujarat, including a woman police constable, were killed on Saturday when their sports utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into a road divider on a national highway near Gurthari village in Punjab’s Bathinda district, police said.

The accident occurred while the group was travelling from Bathinda towards the Dabwali area. Preliminary police assessment suggests the vehicle hit the divider at high speed, causing severe damage and fatal injuries to all five occupants.

The injured were rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda, where doctors declared them brought dead on arrival. The deceased, all aged between 25 and 30 years, were identified as Satish, Bharat, Arjun, Janak and Amita.

A senior police official confirmed that Amita was serving as a constable in the Gujarat Police. The other four victims were also residents of Gujarat, though their exact hometowns were not immediately disclosed.

Police said the families of the deceased have been informed about the tragedy. The bodies have been sent to the Civil Hospital in Bathinda for post-mortem examination.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the crash, with overspeeding or driver fatigue being examined as possible factors.
