New Delhi, 17th Jan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, on his birth anniversary, lauding his lasting impact on governance, welfare and Tamil culture.
In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office and in a post on X, Modi recalled MGR’s multifaceted legacy and his pivotal role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s socio-economic landscape.
“Paying homage to the exceptional MGR on his Jayanti. His contribution to Tamil Nadu’s progress is outstanding. Equally noteworthy is his role in popularising Tamil culture. We will always keep working to realise his vision for our society,” Modi wrote.
The Prime Minister highlighted that MGR’s policies prioritised the welfare of the poor, education and social justice, leaving a deep imprint on the state’s development model. He also credited the late leader for taking Tamil cinema and culture beyond regional boundaries to national and international audiences.
M.G. Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, served as Chief Minister from 1977 until his death in 1987. A legendary actor-turned-politician, he founded the AIADMK and introduced landmark welfare measures, including the midday meal scheme, free education initiatives and support for marginalised communities.
Political leaders across party lines also paid homage to MGR, remembering him as a champion of the underprivileged and an enduring symbol of Tamil pride and identity.
