New Delhi, 16th Jan: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed Rakesh Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, as the new Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

An official order issued by the MHA states that Aggarwal will head India’s premier counter-terror agency until August 31, 2028, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. He is expected to assume charge shortly.

The appointment comes at a crucial time when the NIA is handling several high-profile cases related to terrorism, cross-border terrorism, radicalisation, organised crime, and funding networks. Security analysts view the move as part of the government’s effort to strengthen leadership in its top investigative agency.

Aggarwal brings decades of policing and intelligence experience to the post. As DG NIA, he will oversee nationwide investigations, coordination with central and state agencies, and strategic counter-terror operations.
