New Delhi, 16th Jan: The Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat has formally sought a written explanation from Leader of Opposition and AAP leader Atishi over her alleged remarks against Sikh Gurus made during a recent Assembly debate.
In an official communication, Assembly Secretary Ranjeet Singh informed Atishi that the Chairperson of the Privileges Committee has taken cognisance of a complaint alleging “breach of privilege and contempt” in connection with her statements made inside the House.
The letter directs Atishi to submit her detailed written response to the Secretariat on or before January 19, 2026. The notice makes it clear that her explanation will be placed before the Privileges Committee for further examination.
The controversy erupted after opposition members accused Atishi of making disrespectful remarks about Sikh Gurus during a discussion in the Delhi Assembly. The issue has since escalated into a formal privileges complaint, triggering scrutiny under legislative rules.
Once Atishi submits her statement, the Privileges Committee is expected to review the matter and decide on further proceedings, which could include hearings or recommendations to the Speaker.
Political reactions are already emerging, with the BJP demanding strict action, while the AAP has maintained that the issue is being “politically amplified.”
