Amritsar, 15th Jan: President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu on Thursday addressed the convocation ceremony of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar, asserting that education should be seen not merely as a means of livelihood, but as a powerful instrument to serve society and the nation.

Addressing graduating students, the President said that while careers may take different paths—be it government service, private employment, research, entrepreneurship or teaching—certain qualities remain universally essential. These include a lifelong desire to learn, moral integrity, courage to embrace change, teamwork, disciplined use of time and resources, and a commitment to using knowledge for the greater good.

She reminded students that society contributes significantly to their education, and therefore, they owe a responsibility to give back by working for the upliftment of those left behind in the development journey.

Highlighting India’s progress over the past decade, President Murmu noted the expanding opportunities in sectors ranging from agriculture to artificial intelligence, and defence to space. She urged higher education institutions to further strengthen research, industry–academia collaboration and socially relevant innovation to accelerate national growth.

The President also expressed concern over the rising menace of drug abuse in Punjab, calling it a serious challenge affecting the youth and eroding the social and moral fabric of society. She said educational institutions such as GNDU have a crucial role in guiding young people and fostering a healthy, value-driven society.

Emphasising the importance of the coming two decades in achieving the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat’, she urged universities to inculcate scientific temper, responsibility and a spirit of selfless service among students.

Recalling that GNDU was established during the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the President said his teachings are the guiding principles of the university and a shared heritage for all. She highlighted his emphasis on equality, especially women empowerment, and expressed satisfaction over the growing participation of women in higher education, evident from the number of female graduates and medal recipients at the convocation.

President Murmu concluded by urging young graduates to choose professions that strengthen the nation, reinforce human values and contribute meaningfully to society.
