New Delhi, 7th Jan: India has crossed a historic milestone in public healthcare quality, with 50,373 health facilities certified under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) as of December 31, 2025, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
The achievement marks a major step in strengthening quality, safety and patient-centred care across all States and Union Territories, ensuring equitable access to healthcare, especially for poor and vulnerable populations.
The NQAS programme, launched in 2015 with just 10 certified facilities, initially focused on District Hospitals. It was later expanded to Sub-District Hospitals, Community Health Centres and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs at the primary and sub-health centre levels, institutionalising quality assurance across the entire public health system.
The introduction of virtual assessments significantly accelerated certification. Certified facilities rose from 6,506 in December 2023 to 22,786 in December 2024, and further to 50,373 by December 2025. Of these, 48,663 are Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 1,710 are secondary care facilities, including CHCs, SDHs and District Hospitals.
Aligned with India’s Universal Health Coverage goals under the National Health Policy 2017, the expansion reflects sustained capacity building, digital innovation and continuous quality improvement mechanisms.
The government said it remains committed to further expanding NQAS coverage and has set an interim target of certifying at least 50 per cent of public healthcare facilities by March 2026, reinforcing quality as a core pillar of healthcare delivery nationwide.
