Dehradun/Agartala, 29th Dec: A 24-year-old college student from Tripura, Angel Chakma, succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after being brutally attacked in Dehradun, allegedly for protesting caste-based abuse. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and protests in Tripura, with demands for swift justice.
According to police sources, Angel was a student at a private university in Uttar Pradesh. On December 9, he went to a local market with his elder brother Michael Chakma when a group of intoxicated youths allegedly made casteist remarks at them. When Angel objected, an argument ensued, following which the accused reportedly attacked the brothers with sharp weapons and iron rods.
Angel suffered severe head and neck injuries and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Despite fighting for his life for nearly 15 days, he succumbed to his injuries on December 26. His brother Michael also sustained injuries in the assault.
A complaint was lodged on December 12, following which police arrested five accused. However, family members have alleged negligence in the investigation and claimed that the main accused is yet to be arrested due to local influence.
Angel’s body was brought to Tripura on December 28 for cremation. The incident has sparked protests across the state, with people demanding justice and stricter action against the culprits. The Chief Minister of Tripura has assured that he will take up the matter with the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh to ensure justice for the victim.
