WASHINGTON, 25th Dec: US Congressman Thomas R. Suozzi has written to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressing concern over recent reports of the murder of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh and sought an official briefing on the safety of religious minorities in the country.
In his December 22 letter, Suozzi flagged what he described as the possible misuse of blasphemy laws and warned that the reported killings had triggered alarm among Bangladeshi-American communities in the United States.

The New York lawmaker requested the State Department to make appropriate officials available to brief him on the prevailing situation in Bangladesh so that he could report back to his constituents and address their concerns.
Suozzi represents New York’s 3rd Congressional District and serves on the powerful House Committee on Ways and Means, including its subcommittees on Tax and Oversight.
The letter adds to growing international attention on minority safety in Bangladesh amid rising reports of communal violence and allegations of misuse of blasphemy-related provisions.
