Hyderabad, 20th Dec: President of India Droupadi Murmu on Saturday said that the confluence of modernity and spirituality is the greatest strength of Indian civilization, asserting that material development alone cannot bring lasting peace and happiness.

Addressing the conference on “Timeless Wisdom of Bharat: Pathways of Peace and Progress”, organised by Brahma Kumaris Shanti Sarovar on the occasion of its 21st anniversary in Hyderabad, the President said the theme was highly relevant in the present global context marked by rapid transformations and deep challenges.

She noted that the world today is grappling with issues such as mental health concerns, social conflicts, ecological imbalance and erosion of human values. In this backdrop, she emphasised the importance of inner stability, emotional intelligence and a value-based approach to life. “Material development alone does not bring happiness and peace,” she said.

Highlighting India’s ancient spiritual heritage, President Murmu said the country’s sage tradition has consistently advocated truth, non-violence and peaceful coexistence. She said India’s spiritual wisdom offers solutions to the world’s mental, moral and environmental crises, and underscored the relevance of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the idea of the world as one family — for achieving global peace.

The President observed that spirituality forms a strong foundation for social unity and national progress. She said individuals rooted in spiritual consciousness develop discipline, tolerance and cooperation, contributing positively to society and nation-building. Such individuals, she added, remain aware of their duties and work towards constructive social change.

Appreciating the role of the Brahma Kumaris organisation, President Murmu said it has, for decades, carried Indian values across the world and strengthened the moral and emotional fabric of societies by spreading peace and positivity. She said the organisation’s efforts amount to a meaningful contribution to nation-building.
