Addis Ababa, 17th Dec: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday concluded his two-day visit to Ethiopia and departed for Oman, marking the third and final leg of his three-nation tour.
In a special and personal gesture, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali once again drove PM Modi to the airport and personally bid him farewell as he emplaned for Oman. Notably, Abiy Ahmed Ali had also received the Indian Prime Minister at the airport on Tuesday and himself drove him to the hotel, reflecting the warmth of bilateral ties.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi and his Ethiopian counterpart planted a sapling in Addis Ababa under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. PM Modi also addressed a Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, where he highlighted deep cultural parallels between the two nations. Drawing comparisons between India’s national song Vande Mataram and Ethiopia’s national anthem March Forward, Dear Mother Ethiopia, he said both countries refer to their land as “mother,” reflecting a shared civilisational outlook.
“It was a great honour and privilege to address the Ethiopian Parliament. Ethiopia’s rich history, culture and spirit inspire deep respect and admiration,” PM Modi said in a post on X, adding that India remains committed to strengthening the partnership based on shared values, trust and a common vision for peace and development.
During his address, the Prime Minister also referred to Ethiopia’s role in human history, mentioning the discovery of early human footprints. Citing the global significance of “Lucy or Dinkinesh,” he said humanity shares a common origin and destiny. “In India, we believe in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family,” he said.
PM Modi also expressed his delight after interacting with Ethiopian ministers and Members of Parliament following his address. As part of his engagements, he laid a wreath at the Adwa Victory Monument and visited the Adwa Museum, where he was briefed on Ethiopia’s historic resistance and legacy.
During the visit, the Prime Minister was conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, for which he conveyed his deep gratitude to the government and people of the African nation.
Prime Minister Modi had arrived in Ethiopia on Tuesday to a rousing welcome, with the visit marking a key milestone in the growing India–Ethiopia strategic partnership.
