New Delhi, 12th Dec: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed Special Roll Observers (SROs) to oversee the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

According to the Commission, the observers have already commenced their work and will remain present in the assigned states two days a week until the final Electoral Rolls are published in February 2026.

The SROs are mandated to hold meetings with state-level and district-level leadership of all national and state political parties to ensure that the revision process is inclusive and reflective of on-ground concerns.

They will also meet Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) and District Electoral Officers (DEOs)—either physically or virtually—to monitor preparations, guide implementation, and ensure that the revision is carried out in a smooth, transparent and participatory manner.

The Commission emphasised that the role of SROs is to ensure no eligible elector is left out of the rolls and no ineligible person is included, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the voter list ahead of the 2026 roll publication.
