Guwahati, 8th Dec: The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government on Monday distributed scooters to 11,250 meritorious students under the Dr Bani Kanta Kakati Merit Award Scheme at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati, an initiative rolled out months ahead of the state elections next year.

As per the updated guidelines issued in December, students who secured 80% or above in the 2025 Higher Secondary Examination qualified for the benefit.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally handed over the scooters to the beneficiaries, reiterating the government’s focus on fostering academic excellence. “We launched this scheme to provide scooters to students who achieve a certain benchmark in the Higher Secondary examination. Initially, the eligibility base was broader, but this year we set the cutoff at 80% due to the introduction of another scheme,” he said.

Sharing details of the event, Sarma added, “Distributed scooters to 11,250 bright students today, which will motivate them to continue their track record of good academic performance and encourage others to give their best shot and make themselves and their parents proud.”

The merit award scheme is part of the state’s broader effort to support students, incentivise performance, and strengthen educational outcomes across Assam.
