Rabi Sowing Hits 393 Lakh Hectares

Wheat leads growth at 16.91%; oilseeds, pulses, and millets show steady rise

New Delhi, 2nd Dec: India’s rabi crop sowing has crossed 393.07 lakh hectares as on 28 November 2025, reflecting an increase of 35.33 lakh hectares compared to the previous season, data released by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare showed.

Wheat recorded the strongest expansion this year, rising to 187.37 lakh hectares from 160.26 lakh hectares in 2024–25 — an increase of 27.11 lakh hectares, marking the highest growth among all rabi crops. Rice also registered a modest rise in area, reaching 9.10 lakh hectares.

Pulses have been sown across 87.01 lakh hectares, up from 85.06 lakh hectares last year. Among major pulses, gram leads with 62.49 lakh hectares, followed by lentil at 11.42 lakh hectares. Fieldpea, kulthi, lathyrus and other pulse varieties show mixed trends, with some registering marginal declines.

The area under Shri Anna and other coarse cereals has increased to 29.06 lakh hectares compared to 26.58 lakh hectares last year. Jowar and maize saw notable gains, while small millets recorded a slight but positive rise.

Oilseeds have crossed 80.53 lakh hectares, showing an increase of over 3 lakh hectares. Rapeseed and mustard dominate the segment with 77.06 lakh hectares, marking an increase of 4.14 lakh hectares from last season. Safflower and sunflower also expanded, while groundnut and linseed showed declines.

The total sowing across all major rabi crops stands at 393.07 lakh hectares against a normal rabi area of 637.81 lakh hectares, marking steady progress as the season advances.
