New Delhi, 1st Dec: The CBI on Monday arrested a man for his alleged involvement in the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiyya Sayeed, daughter of then Union home minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, marking a crucial development in the decades-old JKLF terror case, officials said.

The accused, a resident of Ishber Nishat, was taken into custody for his suspected role in the abduction carried out by JKLF terrorists on December 8, 1989. The kidnapping triggered a political storm at the time, eventually leading the then BJP-backed V P Singh government to release five jailed terrorists to secure Rubaiyya’s freedom after five days.

Now residing in Tamil Nadu, Rubaiyya is a prosecution witness in the case being pursued by the CBI, which assumed investigation responsibilities in the early 1990s.

Yasin Malik, a key accused in the kidnapping conspiracy, remains lodged in Tihar jail following his May 2023 conviction by a special NIA court in a terror-funding case.

The latest arrest adds momentum to the agency’s efforts to fully unravel the conspiracy behind one of the most politically sensitive cases from the Kashmir insurgency era.
