Ministers brief Vice-President on housing progress, smart cities, renewable push

New Delhi, 29th Nov: Vice-President of India and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan was briefed on the major initiatives and achievements of the Housing & Urban Affairs and Power Ministries during a meeting at Parliament House on Friday. Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Power Shri Manohar Lal and Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs Shri Tokhan Sahu, along with senior officials, presented a detailed review of ongoing programmes.

The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) outlined progress under key flagship schemes including Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U), the Smart Cities Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban, and AMRUT. Officials highlighted improvements in affordable housing delivery, urban mobility, metro expansion, waste management, water supply systems, and the broader push for sustainable and resilient city infrastructure.

The Ministry of Power shared an overview of India’s growth in the power sector, noting enhanced generation capacity, grid modernisation and structural reforms aimed at strengthening distribution efficiency and the financial health of DISCOMs. The Ministry also highlighted India’s expanding renewable energy integration, new energy storage capabilities, and energy efficiency measures led by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

Acknowledging the briefings, the Vice-President said that both urban development and the power sector form the backbone of India’s economic progress. He appreciated the ministries’ efforts to create cleaner, greener and more inclusive cities and emphasised the need for people-centric policies that benefit all sections of society.

He also lauded the efforts to ensure energy security and accelerate the shift towards clean and renewable energy, noting that reliable electricity and sustainable city planning are essential pillars for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat.
