New Delhi, 27th Nov: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today said that reforms in direct and indirect taxes, along with the “One Nation, One Tax” GST framework, have made India’s tax structure simpler and more transparent, strengthening the country’s growth trajectory. He emphasised that revenue service officers bear the responsibility of maintaining and advancing this transparent system.

Birla was addressing the Officer Trainees of the 76th Batch of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS–C&IT), who are attending an Appreciation Course in Parliamentary Processes and Procedures organised by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) at the Parliament House Complex.

Expressing satisfaction over the rising number of women officers in Central and All India Services, Birla said the growing representation of women reflects India’s aspirations and progress. He also lauded the technical proficiency of today’s youth, noting that their expertise in advanced technology, research, and innovation will help India move toward global leadership.

Birla highlighted that the Parliament of India stands at the core of democratic governance and policymaking, and that IRS officers will serve as vital pillars of the country’s economic strength in the coming years. He stressed that IRS officers not only collect taxes but also promote trust with honest taxpayers, support business facilitation, prevent illicit trade and money laundering, and uphold financial discipline.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to simplifying the taxation system so that citizens feel connected to India’s economic progress. Birla noted that modern tools such as digital tax systems, AI-based assessments, and data analytics are further enhancing transparency and fairness in tax administration. He urged the trainees to deepen their study of tax laws, parliamentary debates, and recent legislation to fully understand the intent behind the law.

The 76th Batch of IRS–C&IT comprises 79 officer trainees, including five from Bhutan. Women account for 40% of the batch, while 32% of the trainees come from rural backgrounds. The batch has an average age of 28, and 51 trainees have prior work experience.
