New Delhi, 24th Nov: Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan on Monday addressed the Civic Honour Ceremony for Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Sannidhanam of Dakshinamnaya Sringeri Sharada Peetham through video conferencing at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
In his address, the Vice-President underlined that the Jagadguru is the successor-designate in the unbroken spiritual lineage of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya, carrying forward the Advaita tradition nurtured at the historic Sringeri Peetham.
Recalling Adi Shankaracharyaji’s civilisational contribution, he noted that the philosopher-saint travelled across Bharat, revitalised Sanatana Dharma and unified diverse spiritual streams before establishing the first of the four Amnaya Peethams at Sringeri. For over twelve centuries, he said, the Sringeri Mutt has upheld values of compassion and selfless service while shaping Hindu thought and scholarship.
The Vice-President highlighted the Mutt’s role in preserving traditions such as rigorous Vedic study, Sanskrit learning, classical arts, and the grooming of scholars and acharyas. By welcoming people from diverse backgrounds, he said, these centres embody the Vedic ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family.
He added that Sanatana Dharma teaches that service to humanity is service to God, and that mutts, temples, ashrams and peethams act as the lifeblood of Bharatiya Sanskriti, preserving dharma, nurturing ancient knowledge systems, serving society and fostering inter-faith harmony.
He also emphasised that India’s civilisational ethos has always rested on Santulaya (balance), noting that Bharat has been the birthplace of many faiths while also embracing every tradition that sought refuge on its soil.
The event, along with a spiritual discourse by the Jagadguru on “Hindu Religious Institutions: Traditions, Customs and Inter-Religious Engagements,” was organised by the India Foundation at the India Habitat Centre.
