PM Modi Meets South African President in Johannesburg

Leaders review strategic ties, discuss tech and investment cooperation on G20 sidelines

Johannesburg, 23rd Nov: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Johannesburg on the sidelines of the G20 Summit and held wide-ranging discussions on bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

The Prime Minister thanked President Ramaphosa for the warm hospitality and successful conduct of the Summit, acknowledging South Africa’s efforts in carrying forward the priorities set during the New Delhi G20 Summit.

Both leaders reviewed the strong historical partnership between India and South Africa and expressed satisfaction over progress in key areas, including trade, investment, food security, skill development, mining, and youth exchanges.

They discussed the scope for greater collaboration in emerging sectors such as Artificial Intelligence, Digital Public Infrastructure and critical minerals. The leaders also welcomed the expansion of Indian businesses in South Africa and agreed to further facilitate mutual investments across infrastructure, innovation, mining and start-ups.

Prime Minister Modi thanked the South African government for supporting India’s cheetah relocation programme and invited President Ramaphosa to join the International Big Cat Alliance.

Reaffirming their shared commitment to the Global South, both leaders agreed to work together to amplify the voice of developing nations. Modi appreciated South Africa’s proposal for convening an IBSA leaders’ meeting. President Ramaphosa assured full support for India’s upcoming BRICS Chairship in 2026.
