New Delhi, 22nd Nov: BJP has reacted positively to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s praise of the recent White House meeting between US President Donald Trump and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, calling it a lesson in democratic conduct for Indian politics.

Tharoor shared the video of the interaction on X, highlighting how leaders can fiercely contest polls yet work together once the electorate has spoken. “This is how democracy should work… once it’s over, learn to cooperate in the national interest. I would love to see more of this in India—and am trying to do my part,” he wrote.

In the clip, a reporter asks Mamdani whether he still views Trump as a “fascist,” to which Trump interjects saying he doesn’t mind the label — a gesture Tharoor cited to underline democratic maturity.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala applauded the Congress MP’s message, remarking that he has once again reminded his party to choose national interest over family loyalty. He alleged that Congress behaves like a “sore loser” after election defeats and urged Rahul Gandhi to heed Tharoor’s advice rather than reprimanding him.

Tharoor has lately emerged as a divergent voice within Congress. His recent appreciation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP veterans, along with his critique of dynastic politics referencing the Nehru–Gandhi family, has triggered discontent among party colleagues.

With this latest intervention, political observers believe Tharoor has amplified an ongoing internal debate on how Congress must redefine its role in a competitive democratic landscape.
