New Delhi, 15th Nov: President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid floral tributes to Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary at Prerna Sthal in the Parliament premises on Saturday, observed nationwide as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Members of Parliament, former MPs and several dignitaries also joined the ceremony, honouring the iconic tribal freedom fighter on his 150th birth anniversary.

Earlier, Speaker Birla posted a tribute on X, calling Birsa Munda an “unparalleled freedom fighter” and “eternal symbol of tribal identity and self-respect”. He wrote that despite limited means, Birsa Munda’s struggle for “water, forest and land” became a revolutionary force against colonial rule. Birla noted that his leadership ignited nationalism and inspired countless youth through his courage, sacrifice and commitment to justice, adding that his legacy continues to guide the nation’s path towards duty, equality and cultural dignity.

Bhagwan Birsa Munda, who led the Ulgulan (Revolution) against British rule, remains a revered figure for tribal communities across India. His leadership and resistance shaped a powerful chapter in the country’s freedom struggle.

Since 2021, November 15 has been observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to honour tribal freedom fighters and celebrate their contributions to India’s history, culture and nation-building. Events held across the country highlight tribal heritage and foster pride and recognition of their role in India’s journey to freedom.

As part of the celebrations in Parliament, tribal folk artists from various states performed at Prerna Sthal, extending a vibrant cultural welcome to the dignitaries.
