Patna, 14th Nov: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is on course to retain power in Bihar, with official data showing the coalition leading in 190 of the 243 assembly seats up for grabs. In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan, formed by parties including the RJD and Congress, is ahead in just 49 seats according to the latest figures from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The NDA comprises major parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (United) [JDU] led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, LJP-Ram Vilas (LJP-RV) headed by Union Minister Chirag Paswan, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM-Secular) of Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) led by Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha.
For the first time in state history, the BJP appears poised to emerge as the single-largest party, leading in 87 constituencies with an approximate vote share of 21.56%. Historically in Bihar, the BJP has played a supporting role to JDU, despite contesting similar seat numbers. This time around, both BJP and JDU contested on 101 seats each.
While the JDU is showing improved performance — leading in 76 seats, up from 43 seats in 2020 — it remains behind the BJP in current trends. The party’s strike-rate stands at 75.24% with a vote share of 18.87%.
Even though the BJP has not yet exceeded its best tally (91 seats in 2010), this performance marks a significant resurgence from the 53 seats it won in 2015 when JDU contested under the Grand Alliance. In the 2020 state polls, the BJP had secured 74 seats.
With these early trends, the NDA appears positioned for a decisive win in Bihar, and the BJP may for the first time lead from the front in the alliance—a shift that could reshape power dynamics within the coalition.
