Thimphu, 11th Nov: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed a grand event in Thimphu marking the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Speaking at the Changlimethang Celebration Ground, PM Modi extended warm greetings to the Royal Family and reaffirmed India’s enduring friendship with Bhutan, calling the relationship one of “values, emotions, peace, and progress.”
Opening his address with an emotional note, the Prime Minister said, “I come here with a very heavy heart. The horrific incident that took place in Delhi yesterday evening has disturbed everyone. Our agencies will get to the bottom of this conspiracy, and the perpetrators behind it will not be spared.” Modi added that he remained in touch with investigative agencies throughout the night and assured that “all those responsible will be brought to justice.”
Invoking India’s ancient ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family — Modi highlighted that the two nations share a spiritual and cultural bond that transcends geography. He said, “India draws inspiration from the ancient ideal ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah’—happiness for all. The peace prayers in Bhutan resonate with the hearts of 140 crore Indians.”
The Prime Minister lauded Bhutan’s environmental achievements, noting that it is the world’s first carbon-negative nation and among global leaders in per-capita renewable energy generation. “Expanding this capacity, today another major hydropower project is being launched, increasing Bhutan’s power generation by 40%. India and Bhutan are also stepping forward together in solar energy,” he announced.
On strengthening connectivity, PM Modi stated, “Connectivity creates opportunity, and opportunity creates prosperity.” He announced plans to link Bhutanese cities Gelephu and Samtse to India’s railway network, easing access for Bhutan’s industries and farmers to Indian markets.
Modi praised Bhutan’s youth-centric initiatives led by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and underscored growing cooperation in education, innovation, sports, and technology, including joint satellite development.
Highlighting cultural and spiritual ties, the Prime Minister referred to the recent inauguration of the Royal Bhutanese Temple in Rajgir and announced that land has been allocated in Varanasi for another Bhutanese temple and guest house.
Concluding his address, PM Modi expressed deep respect for the Fourth King’s visionary leadership and reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for Bhutan’s progress. “May India and Bhutan continue on the path of peace, prosperity, and shared progress,” he said, invoking blessings of Lord Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava.
