New Delhi, 11th Nov: The Delhi Police have taken into custody the mother and two brothers of the suspected suicide bomber believed to be behind Monday evening’s Red Fort blast that killed nine people and injured 20 others.
The explosion occurred around 6:52 pm near the Red Fort Metro Station, when a Hyundai i20 car went up in flames, scattering debris and leaving several vehicles severely damaged. Witnesses described a deafening blast that shook the bustling area, followed by scenes of chaos and panic as bystanders rushed to help the injured.
Police sources said the detained family members belong to Pulwama in South Kashmir, and investigators suspect the car’s driver may have been linked to a terror network operating across Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana.
The Delhi Police have invoked sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) after forensic analysis and intelligence inputs confirmed the use of high-grade explosives in the attack.
Connection to Faridabad Explosive Recovery
The incident came hours after J&K Police recovered nearly 3,000 kg of explosives from two residential buildings in Faridabad, Haryana. The material — including 350 kg of ammonium nitrate — was seized based on inputs from Dr. Adil Rather, a Pulwama-based doctor arrested last week for alleged terror involvement.
Officials believe the Red Fort blast and the Faridabad explosives haul are interlinked, suggesting a broader terror plot that was being executed in stages.
Forensic experts are examining the remnants of the car and nearby CCTV footage to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the explosion. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) have also joined the probe.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said the explosion was of “high intensity,” adding that multiple teams are verifying whether the bomber acted alone or was part of a larger module. “The evidence points toward a suicide bombing attempt, but final confirmation will follow forensic tests,” he stated.
Following the attack, Delhi has been placed on high alert, with security tightened at major installations, metro stations, and government offices.
