Thiruvananthapuram, 4th Nov: Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Tuesday emphasized the critical role of research and innovation in building a Vikshit Bharat @2047 during his visit to the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), an Institution of National Importance under the Department of Science and Technology.
During his visit, the Vice-President inaugurated an exhibition of medical devices developed by SCTIMST’s faculty and associated start-ups at the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies (AMCHSS). He praised the institute for integrating medical sciences with biomedical technology over the past four decades, establishing itself as a model of excellence in healthcare innovation.
Highlighting SCTIMST’s indigenous breakthroughs such as the low-cost Chitra heart valve, blood bags, and spot diagnostic tests for tuberculosis, Radhakrishnan lauded the institute’s achievements in patent filings, technology transfers, and design registrations. He said such innovations have earned global recognition and contribute significantly to India’s vision of self-reliance in healthcare.
Calling upon researchers to extend their outreach to underserved communities, the Vice-President said, “Research and innovation must ultimately benefit those who need it most. Inclusive innovation is the foundation of a truly developed India.”
Radhakrishnan also toured the newly inaugurated nine-storey hospital building under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), which features advanced operation theatres, cath labs, CT scanners, and expanded ICU facilities. He commended SCTIMST for strengthening India’s healthcare infrastructure and promoting affordable medical solutions.
The event was attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar, Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi, Kerala Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal, and SCTIMST Director Dr. Sanjay Behari, along with Vice-Chancellors and members of the institute’s statutory bodies.
