Nainital, 4th Nov: President of India Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday graced the 20th convocation ceremony of Kumaun University at Nainital, Uttarakhand. Addressing the gathering, she highlighted the transformative power of education and its role in shaping a self-reliant, compassionate, and progressive society.

“Education is the foundation of any nation’s development. It should not only develop students’ intellect and skills but also strengthen their moral strength and character,” the President said. She added that education not only makes individuals self-reliant but also teaches humility and a sense of service toward society and the nation.

Urging students to dedicate their education to the service of the underprivileged and the nation, the President remarked, “This is the true religion—one that brings happiness and satisfaction.”

Highlighting India’s economic progress, President Murmu said that the Indian economy remains one of the fastest-growing in the world and that the government’s policy initiatives are creating vast opportunities for the youth. She called upon higher education institutions to encourage students to make the most of these opportunities.

Underlining the need for innovation and research, the President said, “It is important to promote research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the country.” She lauded Kumaun University’s commitment to excellence in education and research, and urged the institution to adopt a multidisciplinary approach for effective learning and application.

The President also spoke about environmental conservation, noting that the Himalayas are rich in life-giving resources. She appreciated the University’s conscious efforts toward environmental protection and sustainability.

“As an educational institution, Kumaun University has social responsibilities,” she said, urging faculty and students to visit nearby villages, understand their challenges, and contribute to local development.

Reaffirming India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, the President said that youth have a crucial role to play in achieving this goal. “With their talent and dedication, students of Kumaun University will contribute significantly to nation-building,” she added.

Earlier in the day, President Murmu offered prayers at the Naina Devi Temple and visited the Shri Neem Karoli Baba Ashram at Kainchi Dham.
