Malkangiri, 3rd Nov: Odisha Police achieved a major success on Sunday after busting a gang involved in the illegal smuggling of hashish oil in Malkangiri district. Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinodh Patil said the police seized 60 kilograms of the contraband, valued at around ₹8 crore in the international market.

According to officials, the breakthrough occurred when a Chitrakonda police team, while on patrol around 11 a.m., received intelligence about eight individuals gathered near the Sal tree forest at ESSAR Chowk. The group was reportedly preparing to transport hashish oil to a buyer in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Acting swiftly, the police reached the spot, but the suspects fled into the dense forest upon noticing the patrol team, abandoning eight motorcycles and a plastic sack containing the illegal substance. Despite a chase, all eight managed to escape.

“This is the first-ever hashish oil seizure in Malkangiri district and across Odisha,” SP Patil told reporters, adding that efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the accused.

He also highlighted that, as per data from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), such seizures are most frequent in southern states like Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. “This seizure marks the highest quantity recovered in a single case in the country,” Patil said.
